Learn Reiki at The Reiki Academy – a Reflection
A Personal Review of Learning Reiki 2 with The Reiki Academy, London
learning, connecting, empowering
My Reiki Background
My Reiki journey started over 30 years ago. I completed the first stage of training, along with reflexology soon after leaving school and started a small Reflexology practice. However, when my son came along, I figured I needed to get a ‘proper’ job as complementary therapies were not as popular in the 90s as they are now, so I trained to be a teacher. However, Reiki stayed with me in the background as a technique to use on myself and especially my son as he grew up.
30 years on and going through a challenging time emotionally and physically I felt a strong intuitive pull to go back to Reiki and complete the next stage of the training, initially for my own healing and spiritual development, and then with the hope to treat others.

Why I chose The Reiki Academy
I researched various Reiki schools in the UK and in Europe, but The Reiki Academy stood out to me in terms of professionalism, experience and ongoing support. The school has trained over 10,000 students and combines both Japanese and Western traditions of Reiki. Courses are accredited by the Complimentary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) thus ensuring a high standard of teaching. It’s also one of the few schools that offer a diploma in Reiki, enabling practitioners to go on and work in the NHS.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an energy healing method transmitted from one person to another, by placing hands either on or above the body. Reiki or ‘rei’ and ‘ki’ loosely translates as universal energy.
It is a recognised complementary therapy and due to it’s non intrusive nature, hospitals in a range of countries such as the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia have implemented it as part of patient care.
Reiki opens the space for deep relaxation and allows you to reconnect with yourself. After a Reiki session many people comment that have the feeling of coming home to themselves. Reiki softens your entire being, allowing your outer shield to drop away enabling you to tune in to yourself.
When I’ve received a Reiki treatment, one of the first realisations I often have is how far I have disconnected from my core. After the Reiki I literally say to myself ‘oh there you are Jenny’ – a real sense of returning.
There are a range of benefits and each person will experience Reiki differently.
Benefits include:
- deep relaxation through supporting the body to release stress and blocked energy
- enhanced sleep quality
- possible pain reduction and accelerated physical healing
- a reconnection you with the power and peace you hold within your self.
My Training Experience with The Reiki Academy
it was a cold December morning when I entered the Barnes Green Centre in London for my two days’ of Reiki Level 2 training. I was met by the warmth of Torsten Lang, founder of the academy, two teachers and a group of 30 or so like minded people eager to embrace the next stage of their Reiki journey.
I was unsure of what to expect and felt some nervous anticipation, given that I had completed my Reiki 1, 30 year’s ago. In the back of mind, I was questioning whether I could do this, whether Reiki would work for me, whether anyone would feel the Reiki I gave them….
However, in order to recap I had undertaken Tortsen’s online Reiki 1 course the previous month, so I felt a certain level of familiarity with his teachings and the latest research.

The Reiki 2 Course
The two days were split into four key areas:
Day 1 – Theory
The first morning was heavily theory based, with an introduction to the Reiki symbols that enable practitioners to offer more in-depth personalised Reiki treatments by harnessing the healing power and harmony of Reiki energy. The teachings were clear and informative, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and gain clarification. Each aspect of teaching was followed by an example of practical application.
We also received the Reiki 2 attunement on day 1, which enables practitioners to use the Reiki symbols.
Day 1 – Practice
The afternoon was dedicated to practising what we had learnt by giving and receiving Reiki to fellow students. Out came the treatment benches, the lights were dimmed and gentle Reiki music played. We experimented with the new knowledge we had gained in using the Reiki symbols.
This practice was invaluable, and as practitioners we began to feel the subtle differences in the energy flow and gain feedback from our clients in relation to what they felt.

Day 2 – Distance Reiki and Intuitive Reiki Theory
Distance Reiki – the morning of the second day was dedicated to learning the art of giving distance Reiki, which is something I was particularly interested in, after receiving distance Reiki healing in the past and being literally blown away by it’s impact. So this was where, I got excited!
Intuitive Reiki – we were also introduced to intuitive Reiki, which is the ability to scan the body and give Reiki to where it it most needed, rather than following a rigid practice.
Day 2 – Practising Distance Reiki
The afternoon of day 2 was then given over to practicing distance and intuitive Reiki, and I have to say this is where I really began to feel a stronger connection with the Reiki energy. Any remaining nerves from the previous day evaporated and I experienced what can only be described as a deep knowing.
As I practised giving a distance Reiki treatment to my partner, who was in the other room, I entered a deeply meditative state and a strong sensation that my hands were being guided by something beyond myself. I had a profound understanding, that I was not giving the Reiki treatment but the universal energy of all life was flowing through me to my partner.
When it was my turn to receive a distant treatment, I lay down, initially a little worried that I wouldn’t feel anything, but then with a whoosh I felt heat throughout my whole body, a sense of lifting from my abdomen and what can only be described as an outer body experience. Tears fell, not of sadness but of immense joy.
Wow!
Following the treatments, as a group we shared our experiences. People reported a wide range of physical and emotional sensations, with some sharing that they’d had visions and psychic messages. One particular couple reported both having the same vision of walking through a dense forest and then flying, and when they returned to the same room and shared their similar visions they were amazed!
However, I think what the majority agreed upon, was that the experience of giving and receiving distance Reiki was actually stronger than in person. Whether this is to do with entering a deeper relaxation, I’m not sure, but it’s certainly fascinating and gave me a further push to want to develop a distance Reiki practice myself.
Additional Teachings
The course also covered professional practice and protocol, insurance, advanced meditation practices, global Reiki healing, the Reiki mantra and the Reiki tanden point system.
My Overall Review on Learning Reiki 2
Learning Reiki 2 with The Reiki Academy was such an incredible, and I would go so far as to say life changing experience.
I felt my confidence grow and felt an affirmation of something that I’d felt for a long time, that we are all connected by a universal life force that is there for us to tap into whenever we want to. This universal energy is there for our healing, our guidance and offers a way to deeply connect to ourselves and all life.
I left the weekend eager and excited to begin practising everything I had learnt on myself and others.
I also felt that a new path in life had opened up for me.
