Seawater & Wellness: My Thalassotherapy Experience at Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa, Sousse
Sea, Serenity, and Spa
Experiencing Thalassotherapy & Wellness in Tunisia
Have you ever heard of thalassotherapy — the therapeutic power of the sea?
I hadn’t, until I arrived in Tunisia.
Seawater, seaweed, and marine minerals combine to restore the body, ease tension, and nurture wellbeing.
I was intrigued….

I think we all sense the ocean’s healing power, but the idea that the sea itself could be part of a restorative experience sounded fascinating — and I was eager to try it for myself.
This review shares my day at the Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa in Sousse, Tunisia, where the Mediterranean meets luxury, expert care, and true restoration.
As a midlife woman, living with FND, a chronic neurological condition, I’m always mindful about where I choose to receive treatments. I need spaces that combine skill, sensitivity, and genuine care — and here, I found all of that, wrapped in an atmosphere of calm and renewal.

What Is Thalassotherapy?
Thalassotherapy — from the Greek word thalassa, meaning “sea” — is the therapeutic use of seawater, seaweed, and marine minerals to promote wellbeing. The principle is that the trace elements found in seawater, such as magnesium and potassium, help to replenish and rebalance the body, particularly when absorbed through warm baths or marine-based treatments.
Often used to ease muscle and joint pain, fatigue, skin conditions, and stress, thalassotherapy has a long tradition across Europe, particularly in France, Spain, and Italy.
Today, Tunisia ranks among the world’s leading destinations to experience it.
Thalassotherapy vs. Hydrotherapy?
It’s easy to confuse thalassotherapy with hydrotherapy, but the difference is:
- Hydrotherapy: uses fresh water to soothe muscles, boost circulation, and ease tension through baths, jets, or steam.
- Thalassotherapy: uses seawater, seaweed, and marine mud — to nourish the body and restore balance.
Think of thalassotherapy as hydrotherapy’s ocean-born cousin, infused not only with the rejuvenating minerals of the sea but also with the healing magic of the vast ocean.

Why Tunisia is an Ideal Wellness Destination
I was surprised to learn that Tunisia ranks second in the world (after France) for thalassotherapy centres.
With more than 1,300 kilometres of coastline, pristine seawater, mild Mediterranean weather, and long, sun-drenched days, that stretch well into late autumn, it’s perfectly suited to rest and recovery.
Tunisia’s wellness appeal extends beyond marine therapies. Across coastal resorts, you’ll find an impressive range of spa treatments:
- Traditional hammam rituals
- Soothing massage therapies and other body treatments
- Facials, body scrubs, and aromatherapy

Affordability and Five-Star Luxury
What also sets Tunisia apart is its unique balance of quality and affordability. Here, you can indulge in five-star spa experiences and even medically supervised wellness programs at a fraction of the cost of many European destinations.
Who doesn’t want that!?

Hospitality and Cultural Richness
Beyond value for money, the country also shines in hospitality and cultural richness. Warm, welcoming staff, vibrant local markets, historic sites, and picturesque coastal towns like Sousse, Hammamet, and Djerba make it easy to combine relaxation with exploration.
For travellers seeking wellness, culture, and coastal tranquillity, Tunisia is ideal.

My Experience at the Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa
From the moment I stepped into the Marine Spa, I felt calm.
Flickering oil burners cast warm light across the stone walls, and the soft scent of essential oils drifted through candle-lit corridors, creating an atmosphere that was both harmonious and soothing.
The staff greeted me with kind smiles and immediately put me at ease — setting the tone for a truly restorative experience.
The Seawater Pool and Jacuzzis
The heated seawater pool is an airy, sunlit sanctuary, overlooking the hotel gardens and sheltered beneath a glass-domed ceiling where sunlight dances across the water’s surface.

I hadn’t expected a seawater pool to feel much different from an ordinary one — but it did. The water felt softer, warmer, and far more buoyant, almost as if it was carrying me.
Lying back, I could gaze up at the sky and feel a gentle, refreshing sense of calm.

I eased into the jacuzzi, where the bubbling jets eased the deep tension in my back and legs.
You can also swim out to an enclosed outdoor seawater pool to soak up the sun and invigorating energy of the open air.

My Treatments: Massage Bath, Mud Wrap, and Back Massage
Marine Spa has a variety of thalassotherapy treatments. During my visit, I experienced three of them:
Massage Bath – Like the seawater pool, the use of seawater in the massage bath surprised me. I hadn’t expected to feel such lightness, but the buoyancy of the water gently lifted me, and once I allowed myself to let go, I began to feel the benefits. As the jets pulsed over different areas, I could feel my muscles slowly softening.
The combination of seawater, milk, honey, coconut, and hydro-massage jets made the experience deeply soothing — though I’ll admit, the jets were stronger than I anticipated, occasionally catching me by surprise, which was refreshing and made me laugh!

Mud Wrap – I opted for the Rheumatic Wrap, a luxurious blend of double seaweed, marine mud, olive, and rosemary.
I loved this treatment!
After being gently smoothed in the warm, mineral-rich mixture — known for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties — I was wrapped up in a plastic sheet (which I know sounds and looks weird!)
Then, to my surprise, the hard surface beneath me began to give way, and I realised I was lying on a warm water bed. Slowly, it cradled my body, holding me in warmth. Around me, the light dimmed to a soft red glow, and gentle, unobtrusive music drifted through the air.
Time seemed to dissolve — thirty minutes passed like five — and I drifted somewhere between wakefulness and dream. It was pure, meditative bliss. I didn’t want it to end…
I’ve experienced a similar treatment in a Moroccan hammam, which I also loved, but the combination of marine mud and the warm water bed here was something else entirely. I definitely want this again!

My only concern? The use of plastic — I couldn’t help but wonder if there might be a more environmentally friendly alternative.
Back Massage – The final treatment was a beautifully balanced massage — both deeply relaxing and satisfyingly firm.
As soft music played and the scent of essential oils filled the room, my therapist, Sonia, worked with slow, rhythmic movements that released the tension gathered around my shoulders and spine. Her skill and gentle kindness made the experience feel not only therapeutic but truly nurturing.
I left the room feeling lighter, looser, and completely at peace.

Between treatments, I lounged in the relaxation areas, sipping fragrant green tea and nibbling on dried fruit. The atmosphere was quiet and unhurried — the perfect complement to the physical treatments.

🌸 A note on the background music: it was truly lovely — calming and unobtrusive. I seem to recall it having a Japanese-inspired feel, though I might be mistaken. What matters most is that I genuinely enjoyed it. So often in spas, the music feels clichéd or even irritating, but here it added to the atmosphere perfectly.

Thoughtful Care and Accessibility
Personalised Support Before My Visit
Before my visit, I contacted the spa to explain my neurological condition and to ask about the suitability of treatments. The team replied promptly and shared a detailed guide to their wellness packages and therapies, including options tailored for different health needs.
I was also informed that I could consult with their on-site doctor to create a personalised wellbeing plan.
Kindness and Care During My Stay
When I arrived, the kindness of the staff stood out. I was struggling with knee pain, and they were immediately attentive.
I had the same therapist, Sonia, for each of my treatments, which I really appreciated — it meant I felt completely safe in her care. She was lovely, both gentle and warm hearted, helping me into the bath and ensuring I felt supported at every stage. This level of attentiveness made all the difference, transforming the experience from merely relaxing to genuinely restorative.
Accessibility at Marine Spa
The spa is thoughtfully designed for accessibility, with lifts, wheelchair ramps, spacious treatment areas, and accessible massage rooms. It’s clear they’ve made a real effort to create an inclusive environment where guests with different mobility levels or health concerns can fully enjoy the experience.

How I Felt as a Midlife Woman with a Chronic Health Condition
Treatments suited my energy levels and health needs. Everything felt age-appropriate, and combined with the tranquil setting and expert care, the spa felt safe, supportive, and deeply rejuvenating — a perfect retreat for midlife women seeking wellbeing and relaxation.
Post Treatment: Relaxing in the Hotel Grounds
After my treatments, I spent some quiet time in the Mövenpick Resort gardens, surrounded by palm trees and sea air. I sipped herbal tea, feeling calm, clear, and beautifully unhurried.

🌸Things to Know
A few practical details are worth keeping in mind if you’re planning a visit:
Seawater Pool Hours: The seawater pool is open to all hotel guests from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
During these hours, the space can become busier — including families with children — so if you prefer a quieter, more meditative swim, definitely plan your treatments or pool time outside of these windows.
Resort Style: The Mövenpick is a five star large, well-managed luxury Swiss chain hotel, popular with both couples and families.
It’s a striking contemporary hotel, with clean, elegant lines and a commanding presence. Its scale and sophistication give it a sense of grandeur, while the gardens, swaying palms, and private beach soften its formality, creating a welcoming and serene setting.
However, I do I think it’s important to understand that, while the spa itself is calm and beautifully designed, it doesn’t have quite the same intimate ambiance you might find in a smaller boutique retreat.
That said, the professionalism, facilities, and level of care more than make up for it — especially if you’re seeking a restorative, well-run spa experience by the sea.

Day Visitors Welcome: You don’t need to stay at the hotel to enjoy the spa. The spa welcomes day visitors.
I visited just for the day, which was ideal for a few hours of complete relaxation and renewal. You can also book a series of treatments over several days to create your own mini thalassotherapy retreat, but stay somewhere else.
There’s a wide variety of accommodation in Sousse and nearby resorts, from large hotels to boutique stays, and apartments. I myself was staying in an Airbnb apartment in Tantana.
Staying at the Mövenpick Resort : The Mövenpick Resort offers elegant rooms overlooking the beach at pools. Staying here allows you to enjoy the full rhythm of thalassotherapy — alternating treatments with time by the sea, healthy meals, and quiet rest.

Exploring Sousse: More Than Just a Spa Destination
While the Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa provides a serene oasis for rest and rejuvenation, Sousse itself offers a delightful blend of culture, history, and coastal charm.

- Museums and heritage sites, such as the Sousse Archaeological Museum and the Ribat fortress, invite exploration for those interested in history and art.
- Port El Kantaoui, a nearby marina, offers a picturesque setting with yachts, cafés, golf, and leisurely walks along the promenade — a more modern contrast to Sousse’s historic heart.
- Cafés and seaside promenades provide relaxed spots to enjoy local cuisine or a refreshing mint tea while watching the waves.
