A Gentle Greek Wellness Retreat for Midlife Women: Healing in Ikaria, Greece
A restorative retreat in Greece for midlife women & chronic illness solo travellers
a space to come home to your body and spirit
This is your time…
Longing for a retreat where you can simply be?
Where yoga is gentle and non-performative, the days are spacious, and the company is warm.
This supportive Greek retreat on the beautiful island of Ikaria is designed for midlife women — including those living with chronic illness — who need a kinder pace, where rest is honoured.

This is a guest feature written by Paula Richardson, founder of the Yoga & Longevity Retreats in Ikaria, Greece.

Ikaria: Where Healing Feels Like Coming Home
Why I Chose Ikaria, Greece (The Blue Zone Island of Longevity)
I first set foot on Ikaria not as a yoga teacher, but as a wife searching for hope. My husband’s chronic blood condition had sent me down a rabbit hole of research, and I kept circling back to the “Blue Zones” – those rare places where people seem to live not just longer, but better.
Ikaria, perched on the edge of the Aegean, called to me with its stories of centenarians, wild landscapes, and that elusive art of taking life slowly.

Therma, Ikaria – Mineral-Rich Hot Springs for Rest and Healing
On my second visit, I found myself in the tiny village of Therma. People have been coming here since Roman times to bathe in the mineral-rich hot springs, seeking relief, connection, and a kind of quiet magic.
The village is a tangle of winding paths, laughter echoing from tavernas, and the ever-present scent of wild herbs. It’s the sort of place where time stretches, and even the most restless mind finds a rhythm.

The Ikarian Way of Life (And Why It Feels So Supportive in Midlife)
What struck me most wasn’t just the beauty, but the way Ikarians live. Meals are long and unrushed, mostly plant-based, shared with friends and family – no one eats alone. Movement is woven into daily life: walking, gardening, dancing.
There’s no obsession with youth; instead, there’s respect for aging and space for everyone, regardless of health or ability. When someone is tired, they rest. When they’re lonely, they wander down the hill for company.
Here, wellness isn’t a checklist; it’s a way of being.

A Gentle Greek Retreat for Midlife Women (Yoga, Stillness and Space)
As a midlife woman and as someone who’s spent years supporting other women through yoga and meditation, I noticed how much this ethos resonated with me and my guests.
Our days in Ikaria are gentle and spacious. We start with yoga that meets each person exactly where they are – no pressure, no “performing.”

Wild Herbs, Sunrise Walks and Simple Island Rituals
Some mornings, we wander into the mountains at sunrise to gather wild herbs, making tea the islanders swear by for vitality.
Ikarian Cooking, Longevity Food and Local Culture
On another day, we might learn to cook Ikarian dishes at a mountain school (the very one featured in the Netflix series How to Live to 100), or set out on a small boat to find secret coves, where the only company is a handful of goats.

A Retreat Pace That Supports Women Living With Chronic Illness
” I was nervous about joining a retreat because of my arthritis and fatigue, but Ikaria was the first place I truly felt seen and supported” Sarah 57
What I love most is watching women, many living with chronic health conditions, or simply carrying the weight of busy, caring lives, begin to soften. There’s time here to nap, to skip a session, to journal or just stare at the sea.
I’ve seen solo travellers arrive anxious and leave with a circle of new friends, buoyed by the unspoken agreement that “you’re safe here, just as you are.”

Ikaria is Not About Fixing You — It’s About Coming Home
Ikaria isn’t about fixing or transforming anyone. It’s about remembering how to feel at home in your own body and spirit, whatever your circumstances.
The island’s secrets are simple: move a little, eat well, rest often, and stay connected – to nature, to others, to yourself.

Accommodation & Retreat Venue – Agriolykos
Nestled on the rocky cliffs of Therma the retreat venue offers a unique blend of authentic Greek charm and breath-taking views.
Perched 7 metres above sea level, it has extensive terraces, a lush garden, and a private yoga amphitheatre overlooking the sea. With its friendly and homely atmosphere, Agriolykos provides the perfect setting for relaxation and unforgettable memories.
There are several room options available and plenty of hammocks for siesta…

Guest Reviews
“I was nervous about joining a retreat because of my arthritis and fatigue, but Ikaria was the first place I truly felt seen and supported. Paula’s yoga classes were gentle, adaptable, and never about ‘keeping up’ – she always checked in and encouraged me to listen to my body. I left feeling stronger, more hopeful, and with new friends who understood what it’s like to need a slower pace. I can’t wait to come back.”
Sarah, 57
“Living with an autoimmune condition means I’m used to missing out or feeling like the odd one out. This retreat was different. There was no pressure to do everything. Paula made it clear that rest was just as valuable as movement. The hot springs, nourishing food, and laughter-filled evenings gave me more energy than I’ve had in years. I felt safe, included, and truly cared for.”
Priya, 54
“I travelled alone, worried my chronic pain would keep me on the sidelines. Instead, I found a group of women who just ‘got it.’ Whether it was modifying yoga poses, taking a break during walks, or simply sharing stories over tea, I always felt welcome. Ikaria’s gentle pace and Paula’s kindness helped me reconnect with my body and my joy. This retreat was a gift I didn’t know I needed.”
Helen, 62
